According to the National Center for Health Statistics, obesity rates have more than doubled in both adults and children since the 1970s. While many might think obesity is generally more of a youth problem, but the fact is that it is a prevalent problem across all age groups, creating a great need in our country for facilities where children and adults are able to receive the help they need to lead healthier lifestyles. At Medi-Weightloss®, we are nationally renowned for our successful methods that produce results and, ultimately, change lives. As a franchisee, you will be able to receive the tools and resources you need to expand your business and provide a much-needed service.

A Worsening Problem

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 38% of adults and 17% of teenagers in the United States are obese. What exactly do they mean by obese? Generally, obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) that is greater than 30. By this measurement, about another third of Americans are overweight, though they are not clinically obese. People who are considered overweight have a BMI of 25.

Additionally, the CDC found that 5% of men and 10% of women were morbidly obese and had a BMI of 40 or more, putting them at risk for a variety of diseases.

So how long has the obesity epidemic been around? For at least three decades and, though the problem is not new, there is still a major need for more investments in research, clinical care, and the development of problems to combat obesity and promote healthier lifestyles. Unfortunately, the data still suggests that this epidemic is not showing any signs of wavering.

According to The Trust for America’s Health, it is projected that 44% of Americans will be obese by 2030, whereas the CDC projects that 42% of adults will suffer from obesity.

Why is it a Problem?

Being overweight or suffering from obesity are both serious problems and increase the risk of diseases that can eventually lead to death. Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is one of the biggest concerns associated with obesity. It can cause stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart diseases, pregnancy complications, and even some cancers. It has also been linked to psychological problems that affect both self-esteem and confidence.
